Window Tint Care Guide

These Terms of Use establish the proper use and maintenance of Window Tint product. The general Auto Trim DESIGN® Terms of Use, available under the Policies area of our site, are incorporated by reference into and made a part of the Window Tint Terms of Use, except to the limited extent that the general Auto Trim DESIGN® Terms of Use are expressly modified below. Care and Cleaning of New Window Film

Rolling windows down: We recommend windows are left up for 3-5 days after they are tinted. This allows tint film sufficient time to adhere to operable window glass edges. Operating windows prematurely may cause tint film to peel. This is not covered under the general product warranty.

Cure Time: For the first few days after windows are tinted they may appear cloudy, hazy or display small water pockets under the tint. This is normal. While tinting, an application squeegee removes most of the water from between film and glass. As tint film dries, residual water generally forms small pockets or bubbles. A porous material, window tint allows moisture to eventually evaporate as the film fully adheres to the glass. The amount of time before tint is completely cured is dependent on the amount of sunlight it’s exposed to. If it's hot and sunny, the film dries quickly; cloudy and overcast, it takes longer. Thus, full cure time can range from two (2) days to one (1) month.

Cleaning: After windows are tinted, we suggest waiting several days to clean them. Soft paper towel and any non-ammonia, “tint safe” cleaner will work fine. Liquid mixtures of soap and water, vinegar and water or any window cleaning product without ammonia or abrasives are considered safe.


Things to Know:

Dot Matrix: Most late model vehicles feature a black ceramic 'frit' edge on some of the windows, such as the rear window. Purposes of Dot Matrix and Black border coatings are aesthetic as well as practical. Black ceramic frit borders most fixed glass panels and provides a clean and crisp decorative edge to openings, hiding the appearance of rubber weatherstrips as well as mechanical structures and fastening apparatus which assist in keeping windows sealed. More importantly, the Black ceramic border helps protect sealants used to mount glass panels to the vehicle body. Most sealants used are sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) rays and may degrade with prolonged exposure thereby causing possible seal failure. At times the Black ceramic edge is straight and flat, other times it has a dotted edge. The Black ceramic dots are relatively thick on most cars and prevent window film from sticking to the glass area between the dots. This results in a silverish appearing strip trimming the glass. Known in the tint industry as "silvering", this occurrence typically isn't extremely noticeable; however, some vehicles have such a wide band of dots that the silverish area created is more pronounced. Unfortunately, the result is unavoidable.

Seat Belt Damage: Care should be used when releasing seat belts and exiting the vehicle. Certain vehicle seat belts tend to "snap" into the glass which may cause small chipping in the window film. This is not covered in the general product warranty.

Scratches in the Glass and/or Film: Older vehicles may exhibit fine scratches that run up and down on rollup windows. This may be caused by minute particles of sand or debris lodged between the outside weather-strip and glass. The action of the window going up and down may generate fine scratches that are difficult to notice. However, installing tint behind these surface scratches make them stand out more than they did before the vehicle was tinted. Unfortunately, there is nothing that can be done about them. They are simply effects of time on the vehicle. In some cases (especially vehicles that frequent sandy or muddy conditions) particles of sand/debris become lodged between the inside weather-strip and the film thereby causing scratches in the film as well. This occurrence is not covered under warranty. Replacement of the window weather-stripping may resolve this issue.

Defroster Lines: Use of defroster units do not affect window tint. Most defroster grids are installed on the inside of window surfaces. Thus, a fine white line may exist at each side of defroster lines, albeit reduced as film cures. In the event tint film is removed from existing windows with defroster lines, we do not guarantee continued operation. Aggressive chemicals and removal tools may affect continuity and render the unit inoperable.

Imperfections: Though we strive for excellence in our applications, due to the nature of the product, vehicle condition (cleanliness) and some degree of dust contamination, minor imperfections may be present in every window film application. Moreover, pre-existing flaws or scratches and metal deposits on the glass are often much more noticeable after windows are tinted. Small “silvery” spots or “metal rubs” - usually found in station wagons or other utility vehicles - are caused by metallic objects (such as a baby stroller handle) rubbing against the inner surface of the glass during travel. This chafing action deposits metal onto the glass creating a silver or grey stain. Usually these metal rubs aren't noticeable until windows are tinted.
